Purpose

  1. Screening: identifying current health problems and special needs of students, as well as developing programs to detect new problems.
  2. Treatment of acute and chronic illness and injury.
  3. Education and counseling: teaching preventive health care, disseminating information on specific health problems, referrals to appropriate specialists and agencies.
  4. Encouraging a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise.

Location & Hours

NurseThe Health Services Office is located in Upper Miller Hall and is staffed by Mary Lou Joline, RN. The regular office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m..

We have a doctor on campus one afternoon each week to see students in the health office. Anyone needing to see the doctor should stop by Health Services & sign up for an appointment. (Walk-Ins will only be seen if time allows.)

Requirements for Prospective Students

  1. Complete health record including a physical exam done by your health care provider is required.
  2. Immunization record.
  3. Proof of meningitis vaccine or signed waiver for all dorm students. Check out these websites for additional information: Vaccinate Before You Graduate, Senate Bill No. 955. Immunizations are available (some are FREE) at the State Health Center, 717-299-7597, 1661 Old Philadelphia PIke, Lancaster, PA.

Suggestions for your Medicine Box

Medicine

  • Aches, pains, fever
    1. Tylenol
    2. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Sore Throats/Cough
    1. Chloraseptic Throat Spray
    2. Throat lozenges
  • Runny, stuffy noses
    1. Sudafed (or generic, non-drowsy brand)
    2. Allergy medication if you suffer from allergies. 
  • Upset stomachs, indigestion, diarrhea
    1. Antacid tablets
    2. Immodium
  • Cuts, scrapes
    1. Triple antibiotic cream
    2. Band-aids
  • Rashes, itchy spots--Hydrocortisone cream
  • Digital Thermometer

If you are on a diet for a particular illness (diabetes, celiac disease, etc), bring a note from your doctor or have him fax it to the Health Office (717-560-8204). We will set up a meeting with the Director of Food Services to accommodate your diet.

Remember to bring any prescription medications you may be taking. You will be responsible for taking them and getting refills when needed.

You are responsible to know your insurance specifics. Find out before coming to campus:

  1. What does your insurance policy cover or not cover?
  2. Do you need a referral or pre-authorization before obtaining health care?
  3. Can you see any physician or only certain physicians?
  4. How are claims filed?
  5. What are your policy & group numbers? Bring your insurance card if one is available
