Academic Advisor – Adult Education

This position exists for the purpose of providing essential academic advising and student services to an assigned portfolio of students.

Candidates will meet the following requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree desired; minimum 2 years of college or related experience a must.
  • Demonstrated experience in a professional, dynamic environment preferably in education or a related field.
  • Higher education student advising experience desired.

Candidates will need to possess the following skills:

  • People and customer service-oriented; ability to work with a diverse population and environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively interact with adult learners
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills; attention to quality, detail and accuracy
  • Goal oriented, self-starter, flexible, and able to handle highly confidential matters
  • Ability to work and thrive in a team environment to meet common goals
  • Possess high learning agility with an open and receptive mindset
  • Ability to work independently, exercise judgement and demonstrate critical thinking/problem solving
  • Ability to effectively multi-task in a fast paced environment and prioritize projects/tasks with minimal or no supervision
  • Demonstrated abilities in data collection, process and operations coordination

Candidates will be responsible for the following tasks:

General:

  • Serve as a liaison and advocate for non-traditional learners in gaining needed academic, technology, financial and guidance services; regularly connect to build/strengthen working relationships and provide support during life transitions.
  • Respond to student questions and concerns; work with students to resolve all issues to ensure ongoing satisfaction with program and successful progress to completion
  • Actively participate in business unit, departmental, and team
  • Learn new technologies and systems, when
  • Oversee student workers, where applicable
  • Maintain student records in keeping with federal and institutional guidelines
  • Gain a working knowledge of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as they relate to student records, sharing of information and
  • Represent the Adult Education Business Unit in a positive manner at college events and in the community at

New student on-boarding:

  • Team with recruiters and relevant personnel to ensure that new students have a positive onboarding experience, setting the foundation for student success. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
    • Assisting with orientation, in conjunction with others and/or as called upon to do so
    • Work with students on understanding, clarifying and finalizing their degree plan
    • Create customized schedules according to student’s needs and preferences
    • Assess student readiness; identify hurdles and possible solutions
    • Help connect students with other departments (i.e., Financial Aid, Solution Center, Help Desk, )

Academic Advising and Retention:

  • Track curriculum or course rotation changes that may impact student degree plans and schedules. Communicate changes to students when
  • Proactively contact students not participating in class and/or who may potentially fail; refer them to student support services (e.g., the Ally Center)
  • Counsel students withdrawing from courses, providing varying options to weigh; update their degree plans/schedules, collaborate with professors and the financial aid office, where appropriate.
  • Closely monitor academically at-risk students, assessing their progress, attendance and needs; develop an agreed-upon Student Success Plan, when
  • Collaborate with professors regarding struggling students, attend professor/student conferences as requested, assist in addressing issues with students regarding deficits and plagiarism, guiding students to the proper resources for their situation. Work with the Manager of Advising and Retention and the Dean as
  • Assist in strategizing and implementing team retention efforts/goals.
  • Assist Solutions Center, Business Office, Registrar’s Office, Student Affairs Office, and Financial Aid office in providing students with necessary information for their success.

Registration and Graduation:

  • Collaborate and assist the Registrar’s Office in compiling the potential graduates list; confer on student degree audits to ensure readiness for graduation; communicate the graduation process, updates and
  • Communicate graduation requirements and work closely with potential graduates to ensure all requirements and deadlines are
  • Work with the Dean to identify students for special recognition and graduation-related
  • Assist in planning graduation-related events for the Adult Education

Assist in other duties whenever called upon as needed for the good and welfare of the total College ministry.
