With overflowing expertise in LBC’s Ally Center, this very capable team offers these 7 study tips that can help students in every phase of their education.
1. Take Notes
Studying starts in the classroom. Good note-taking helps with memory retention and engagement in the class, allowing you to learn the content as it’s taught. Though it sounds simple, it’ll keep you from having to cram when exams and papers come up, since you’ve already learned the material!
2. Environment Matters
Work to find a place to study that isn’t distracting to you – whether that’s alone in your dorm or a room in your home, a library study room or surrounded by people in the student center or a cafe! You may also opt to watch a “Study with Me” video on YouTube or find a friend to help you stay on task.
3. Plan Your Time
As you approach study sessions, plan ahead! This will help you have reasonable expectations for what you’ll get done during the study session because you’ll be going in with an understanding of the assignments. This also helps prevent procrastination!
4. Prioritize
Let’s be honest – you don’t have the time to re-read all your notes, chapters and class presentations. As you design your study time, use the resources your professor gives you (study guides, practice tests, etc.) to decide what to review and where to dig deep.
5. Take Breaks
Whether it’s the Pomodoro Technique or your own system, it’s important to take breaks while you’re studying. Figure out what works for you, and then use your break to go for a short walk or chat with a friend – whatever helps you recharge! Just make sure you get back to work when the break is up 😉
6. Repetition is Key
Studying multiple times a week for shorter periods of time helps with memory retention more than one or two long study sessions. By repeatedly studying your prioritized information, it’ll be stored in long-term memory, ensuring that you actually know the content you’re learning, better preparing you for exam day.
7. Remember Your “Why”
A little motivation goes a long way when it comes to studying. In the moments where you just don’t feel like it, remember your goals. What do you want this term to look like? Why did you choose this program at LBC? What do you hope to do with your degree? By thinking about your long-term vision, the steps you take today will become a bit easier.
Ultimately, good study sessions come out of small choices that add up to habits and discipline. Choose one or two of these tips and start today. You got this!
