Journey Teams: Dominican Republic (2)

May 15, 2017

LBC's Journey Teams are groups of our college students who travel all over the world for short term missions trips to live out the Gospel message. For the next few weeks, we'll be chronicling their work here on our blog!

Today was our second full day spent in San Juan. Our day began bright and early when we left the hotel at 6:45 a.m. After we left the hotel, we drove an hour in our bus to another location where we were met with two pick-up trucks. These trucks drove us the second hour to the Compassion site because the road was too steep and narrow for the bus. Let's just say that ride was an adventure filled with lots of laughs and beautiful sites!

Once we arrived at the Compassion site, we had breakfast together and learned how this site came to be. We also had the opportunity to go on a tour of a nearby coffee plantation!

Next, we split into four groups and visited four different homes of the children involved in the local Compassion project. This was my favorite part of the day! My group visited the home of a single mom with three children. When we arrived, she was immediately ashamed that she had no chairs for us to sit on and kept offering us coffee and juice. We had the privilege to serve her by hiking to a stream with five empty buckets to bring back water for drinking and cooking.

After we all returned from our home visits, we were swarmed by all the children in the program returning from school. We got to lead the children in songs, games and crafts. This time was filled with so much joy and dancing! Although there was an evident language barrier, God was able to use a smile and open arms to eliminate that barrier.

We ended our day at the hotel reflecting on all that we had experienced today! Some of the words used to describe today were: eye-opening, happy, adventurous and vulnerable.

Thank you for your prayers and support! Please continue to pray for energy, for safety as we travel to Santo Domingo tomorrow, for God to open our hearts to what He has to teach us, for opportunities to meet the needs of those we meet, and for Christ to be seen through all we do in love.
