Journey Teams: Dominican Republic (4)

May 18, 2017

LBC's Journey Teams are groups of our college students who travel all over the world for short term missions trips to live out the Gospel message. For the next few weeks, we'll be chronicling their work here on our blog!

Our first full day in San Juan is complete and it is a day that has left an impact on all of us. We spent the first part of our morning at a Compassion project here in San Juan. We game planned on the bus for the more than 300 kids that showed up at the project today. We did Bible stories, crafts, games and singing in what seemed a lot like organized chaos. And sometimes not that organized. Imagine hosting a party in about half of your house for more than 300 people. We also had a few of our team spend time with 100 teenagers at a church down the street.

From there, we did home visits and split up into four groups for four different homes. This was certainly the most impactful part of the day as we sat and talked with moms and dads whose kids are in the compassion program. It's hard to describe in an email the depth of poverty that we experienced today. Many of us packed more in our suitcases for a week-long visit here then many of these people have in their homes. Pray for our team as we continue to process through the raw thoughts and emotions of what seeing people in extreme poverty looks like.

After we enjoyed chicken and rice for lunch we came back to the hotel for some rest before church. We had the privilege of assisting with songs and then preaching in their service. If you know anything about the culture here, it was loud, long, and included a little bit of dancing. The people have been so hospitable and we have felt so welcome here.

Everyone is off to bed as 6:30 will come early. We will have a similar day tomorrow, but will be traveling in trucks to more remote villages in the mountains. The team is excited about the trucks more than they are the start time!

Keep praying for unity as a team - they're doing great. Continue to pray for gospel conversations even despite the language barrier (we have an awesome group of Compassion translators). Pray for endurance - it is hot and the team is going all out!
