Journey Teams: Houston (4)

October 24, 2017

Today our large group divided into two separate teams. One team went to work with at a wonderful woman’s house. They tore down drywall, removed mold, and did general cleanup of the house. The other team, however, went to do something more behind the scenes. Instead of the demolition commonly associated with disaster relief (like what the first team did), the second team served Samaritan’s Purse directly: we cleaned and packed up tools.

The majority of our day was spent washing and sorting the tools so that they could be packed and sent off to the home base. At first, many of us thought it seemed too minuscule a task for us to be doing when there was more to be done at the residents’ homes. But as we cleaned, God began to move our hearts. The leader of the Samaritan’s Purse location came to speak with each of us. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart,” he said. “Most volunteers hear clean up and just vanish. I want to thank you because you turned a five-day project into a single morning project.” Our work seemed so simple and unnecessary at first, but seeing this man’s reactions made all of it seem so much more important. We scrubbed vans, rinsed off brooms and polished sledge hammers. It’s the little things like this that really make an impact on someone.
