When will I be able to file the 2017-18 FAFSA?

Beginning October 1, 2016, the FAFSA will be available to file for the 17-18 academic year. This will give families more time to file the FAFSA than in the past. The 17-18 academic year pertains to periods of enrollment beginning after July 1, 2017.

Which tax year information will I report on the 2017-18 FAFSA?

You will use 2015 tax information to complete the 2017-18 FAFSA. You will NOT need to provide tax data from 2016. This applies to both student/spouse income information and parental income information for dependent students.

How will the IRS Data Retrieval Tool be helpful with this change?

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool will be available to download tax information directly from the IRS. Since 2015 tax data will already be filed, this should be easier to use and result in fewer errors and reduced verification.

What if my income has dropped since I filed 2015 taxes?

If you have experienced a reduction in income, please contact the LBC Financial Aid Office at financialaid@lbc.edu. You may qualify to complete a special circumstance request form.

How will I report family size and number in college?

Family size and number in college will still be reported based on the projected award year ahead. For example, if you are completing the 17-18 FAFSA, you will report the number in college during the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters. Assets are reported as of the date you file the FAFSA.

Which FAFSA do I need to complete if I am enrolling in classes during the winter or spring of 2017?

The 2016-17 FAFSA is required for periods of enrollment from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. If a student is enrolling in classes during this time period, the 16-17 FAFSA should be completed.
